The Instituto Tecnológico del Sector Agroalimentario (AINIA) develops a project to apply nanotechnology to the production of cheaper packaging and lengthen the life of the food they contain. 

Researchers have shown that incorporation of the plastic nanoclays increases the barrier effect and lengthen the useful lifetime of the content.  

Currently the project is in pilot phase and has been the quadrupling of the initial barrier packaging material under study.
