Increasing the life of the aircraft with carbon nanotubes

INASMET-Tecnalia leads a project which aims to increase life and reliability of aircraft and reduce the costs of repair. This project is developed under the 7th Framework Program IAPETUS and is intended to regeneration of aircraft aluminum and the new generation of aircraft composite materials.


At present, about 30% of the worldwide aircraft fleet has more than 15 years, bringing the development of technologies that ensure navigability and prolong their service life.


The regeneration technology is based on the introduction of new multi-functional composite materials, using carbon nanotubes in the matrix of the composite material as the adhesive. This will greatly improve the fracture toughness and fatigue behavior of composite. It is also expected to confer the necessary electrical conductivity between the component and the damaged patch.
